NEWHAVEN LIFEBOAT LAUNCHED TO CAPSIZED VESSEL

July 29 2014.

Newhaven’s Severn Class relief lifeboat ‘RNLB Volunteer Spirit’ was launched on the 25th of July at 2:55pm to reports of a capsized vessel and two persons in the water.

The 20 foot boat with two people on board had capsized approximately one mile south of Peacehaven. Fortunately a passing yacht had recovered the two people from the water.

Newhaven lifeboat quickly located the yacht and the two casualties were transferred to the main lifeboat where they were assessed. The casualties had swallowed some sea water so were taken to a waiting ambulance at Brighton Marina.

Newhaven lifeboat then returned to the scene of the capsize where they used their onboard crane to right the swamped craft. A salvage pump was then used to pump out the sea water and the vessel was towed back to Newhaven Harbour.

The lifeboat’s inflatable Y boat was used to take the stricken craft into the marina. The casualty vessel was then handed over to Newhaven Coastguards.

Newhaven lifeboat returned to station and was again ready for service at 5:55am.
