FISH FESTIVAL FUN

June 22nd, 2018.

The 15th annual Newhaven Fish Festival took place on the West Quay last Saturday, the 16th of June. The attractions included a display of locally caught fresh fish, fish cookery demonstrations and free tasters provided by community chef Olly Dawson, plus children’s art and craft activities, live music and dancing.

The event also included celebrations to mark Sussex Day and the Sussex Charter was read by Maria Caulfield, followed by the Haven Harmonies choir singing Sussex by the Sea and a selection of other nautical songs.

The Children’s Parade marched from Denton Island through the town centre and on to the West Quay to join the event. It was led by the Earthquake Drummers and the town’s Mayor, Cllr Paul Boswell, dressed as Admiral of the Fleet. Over 100 children from local schools and nurseries took part wearing nautical costumes and carrying colourful banners they had made themselves.

Event organiser Sally Foote from Sussex Community Development Association said, "The Fish Festival has now become an institution in Newhaven. This year the community also came together to celebrate Sussex Day, so it was definitely the biggest Festival to date. My thanks as always to Veolia and Rampion for their continued sponsorship of this important community event."
