EAST PIER JUMPERS WARNED

July 21st, 2022.

Newhaven Port Authority has again issued a warning that youths jumping from the East Pier are risking, not only their lives, but also the lives of rescue services and port staff who may need to rescue injured or trapped 'jumpers'.

A Port spokesperson said; "This year these youths have also decided that it is okay to throw the lifebuoys into the river and the sea. This is a misuse of safety equipment intended for saving lives. It is also a criminal offence.

"Some also consider it acceptable to throw stones and bottles at passing vessels.

"Anyone caught jumping or misusing safety equipment or causing any damage will be prosecuted. If they are minors, their parents or guardians will be held accountable.

"The Port is not a playground."
