The countdown is on for the 2015 Denton Community Challenge which this year promises to be bigger and better than ever. It takes place on Saturday June the 6th from 1.00pm through to 5.00pm at the recreation ground opposite Tates Garage, which is next to Paradise Park.

The theme this year is cricket, and the title is Howzat to celebrate 150 years of County Cricket, and Sussex County Cricket Club has kindly donated a special raffle prize. The event's Chairman and Committee are delighted that former England and Sussex player Jim Parks has accepted their invitation to be their special guest on the day.

For the second year running there will be a craft fair in Denton Social Centre adjacent to the field, where you will find lots of interesting craft stalls. Admission to both the Denton Challenge and the Craft Fair are free.

There is a cake competition and you should bring your homemade cakes to the social centre on the day at 12 noon in time for judging.

There will be something for everyone on the field, from stalls, a full programme of arena events and a series of sporting challenges where children can win magnificent rosettes. The MC for the day will be popular local DJ and karaoke king Keith Johnson.

There will be a big raffle with great prizes and separate draws for the cricket bat and a pair of Virgin Atlantic air tickets.

The opening ceremony will be performed by Jim Parks and Norman Baker at 1.00pm.

This is a charity event with the proceeds being divided between three local charities:

THE JAMES DANIEL MEMORIAL FUND set up after 19 year-old James’ tragic death in 2005. It raises money through various events and local schools and sports clubs are invited to apply for funds to assist the purchase of equipment and coaching aids to encourage the development of sporting activities for children and youth oganisations in Denton and the surrounding areas.

FRIENDS AND ASSOCIATES OF DENTON SCHOOL (FADS) to raise much needed funds to purchase items for the school.

ST LEONARDS CHURCH, DENTON built in 1288  is a Bible teaching church and serves the community in a number of ways.

Jim Parks played 46 Tests for England between 1954 and 1968. In these Tests, Parks scored 1962 runs with a personal best of 108 not out and took 103 catches and 11 stumps. He made his Test debut at the age of 22 when he was called up as a batsman for the Test against Pakistan. He switched to wicketkeeping for Sussex CCC in 1958 and he was England’s first choice wicket keeper through the mid 60s. He captained Sussex from 1967 to 1968 when he joined Somerset. He retired from first-class cricket in 1976.
