Lewes District Council’s street cleansing crews have gone into overdrive during lockdown taking on extra duties to keep the district looking its best.

The Environment First team has extended its rounds into areas the council is not responsible for cleaning, to ensure people can enjoy clean and litter free surroundings when they go out for exercise.

Councillor Julie Carr, Cabinet member for Recycling, Waste and Open Spaces, said: “Our street cleansing and waste crews have pulled out all the stops during this challenging period. I would like to thank Environment First staff for going the extra mile and for looking after our surroundings so well.”

Environment First staff have been litter-picking, weeding, emptying bins and sweeping in community areas, open spaces and car parks where needed – whether they are publicly or privately-owned.

West Quay in Newhaven has been targeted and bins emptied at Priory Park in Lewes, Riverside Park in Newhaven and Falmer Pond. A flytip on private land in Shelley Close, Lewes, was also cleared and shingle removed from Seaford and Peacehaven promenades.

Councillor Carr added: “This work is in addition to Environment First’s sterling work to maintain a business as usual service with household waste collections.”
