COUNCIL EXTENDS FREE PARKING IN NEWHAVEN

June 9th, 2021.

Lewes District Council has announced a six month extension to free parking in Newhaven town centre. The move is the latest by the council to support local business as restrictions are lifted and shoppers return to the high street. Parking will remain free in Dacre Road multi-storey car park and Lower Place car park.

Councillor James MacCleary, Leader of Lewes District Council and local Newhaven councillor, said: “This is great news for shoppers and even better news for our town centre following the devastating impact of the pandemic on so many of our local businesses.

“There is so much good news to share about Newhaven and I’d encourage anyone using the free car parks to have a wander around the town centre. There are some great shops and cafes that need our support to rebuild as we hopefully emerge from the government’s restrictions.

“The council is investing millions in the High Street area in the coming years and free parking is something crucial to supporting that. I am very pleased to announce this and hope that local residents will take the time to pop into town and have a look.”

During the pandemic the council was widely regarded in the sector for quickly and efficiently paying out £38.2m in emergency grants to 4,700 local businesses. The council has also been successful in its bid for over £5 million in funding for the town centre.

Councillor MacCleary added: “From the outset of the pandemic we have focused on the needs of the most vulnerable residents and supporting businesses in the district.

“It will be some time before the impact of the last 14 months is behind us, but I can assure everyone that this council will continue to do everything it can to help the people that need that help the most.”
