CLASS ACT AT SEAFORD

August 22 2013.

A World Class act from just along the Sussex coast is headlining the sixth Seaford Live music and arts festival. Shoreham concert guitarist Richard Durrant will launch his busy autumn schedule by showcasing a typically cutting-edge and varied programme of repertoire at St Leonard's Church, Seaford, on Friday, September 6, at 7.30pm.

Top of the bill will be a unique arrangement for guitar and keyboards of the famous Rodrigo concerto - Concierto di Aranjuez - played by Durrant and his co-orchestrator, the internationally renowned pianist Howard Beach.

The pair will also combine in their own arrangement of Vivaldi's Violin Concerto in A minor - this time with Howard Beach on harpsichord. And Durrant, flying solo, will perform his showstopping and much-requested version of Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells.

Other pieces will carry on highlighting Durrant's 25 years in the vanguard of presenting music in ever more intriguing and audience-friendly ways (with digital technology and back projections, for example) while the rest of the classical music world continues to agonise over how to make itself more accessible.

A recent innovation is Durrant playing traditional Romanian folk dances (Rucenitsas) on guitar and laptop. His Seaford audience will also be treated to Spanish repertoire, including John Williams' arrangment of Cordoba by Albeniz ("the whole of Spanish history in four minutes," says Durrant).

Listen out, too, for the much-loved Cavatina by Stanley Myers and Danza Paraguaya, by Agustin Barrios, as Durrant flexes his musical chops in preparation for his third visit to Paraguay in November.

While there, he will not only play the Rodrigo concerto with the Asuncion City Symphonic Orchestra, under the baton of maestro Luis Szarán, but will also world-première, with cellist Pablo Romero, a composition he has been commissioned to write for guitar, cello and cello section.

Meanwhile, on October 21, Durrant is releasing his most ambitious solo album to date, Christmas Guitars, including a guest appearance by comedy legend Barry Cryer.
