BATTLE OF BRITAIN DAY CELEBRATED

September 28 2016.

Thursday the 15th of September was Battle of Britain Day and this was commemorated by the Seahaven Branch of The Royal Society of St George when 50 members and guests gathered at the Seaford (Blatchington) Golf Club for a formal dinner.

Among the guests were the Chair of Lewes District Council, Cllr Nigel Enever and the Mayors of Newhaven and Peacehaven. The RAF element was provided by Flight Sergeant Nick Collins, an Adult Instructor from the Air Training Corps Squadron at Newhaven and two senior Cadet NCOs, Flight Sergeant Luke Williams and Sergeant Lewis Read.

A summary of the day in 1940 was read out by Nick Collins to remind everyone of the sacrifices and the triumph of the few, and the toast was then given to the RAF and the Few.

The opportunity was then taken to present cheques to two forces charities being the surplus money from this year's Seahaven Veterans and Armed Forces Day which is organised by a joint committee consisting of the Seahaven Branch and Seaford Town Council for the whole of the District of Lewes with surrounding towns and villages. President Laurie Holland gave cheques for more than £400 each to Iris Pearce from SSAFA and Julie Jupp from the Royal British Legion.

Branch President, Laurie Holland, who is also a member of the joint committee said: "It is a great privilege to be involved with running Armed Forces Day, and we are all so pleased that we can divert surplus money from the day to the most worthy of forces charities."

The next major function of the Royal Society Branch will be Trafalgar Night, Friday 21st October at Deans Place Hotel in Alfriston, and once again this is open to non-members to attend. For more information contact Branch Chairman, Bob Peedle MBE- www.royalsocietyofstgeorge.com
