LDC TO SUBMIT CASE FOR NEWHAVEN HEALTH AND WELLBEING HUB

July 9th, 2022.

LDC release:

Cabinet councillors at Lewes District Council have agreed to develop and submit a new business case to the government that would lead to a health and wellbeing hub in Newhaven as part of the redevelopment of the old Co-op building.

The new complex would incorporate GP services, expanded and improved leisure facilities and forms a key part of the council’s Reimagining Newhaven programme.

Councillor James MacCleary, Deputy Leader of Lewes District Council and Newhaven councillor, said: “The decision we have made today is terrific news for residents and our GPs.

“We’ve redeveloped a site in the centre of Newhaven to provide new and expanded primary care accommodation that will play a key role in the town’s wider regeneration.

“Newhaven residents must have access to modern health facilities and services and that’s why I’m so excited by these latest plans.”

The health and wellbeing hub proposals could see Wave Leisure, the operator of Seahaven Swim and Fitness Centre, working alongside general practice teams.

Councillor Zoe Nicholson, Leader of Lewes District Council, said: “Our new business case will unlock opportunities that are transformative for Newhaven residents.

“What an incredibly exciting prospect to imagine the health and wellbeing benefits our plans will bring for people in the town.”

The provision of space for creative and arts related interests as set out in the original plans, will be accommodated in the now empty Peacocks unit that neighbours the old Co-op building.
