Cabinet councillors at Lewes District Council today recommended that council tax support for district households on the lowest incomes continues for the next financial year.

The Council Tax Reduction Scheme (CTRS) provides financial support to around 3,000 of the most disadvantaged working-age residents by helping them meet their council tax liabilities and allows about 2,000 of those experiencing the greatest hardship to not pay any council tax at all.

Today’s decision reflects the council's ongoing commitment to supporting the most financially vulnerable in the district.

??Councillor Christine Robinson, Deputy Leader of Lewes District Council and Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing, said: “This essential scheme reflects our key priority to help residents experiencing severe hardship, and I am very pleased that Cabinet colleagues have endorsed its continuation next year.

“CTRS has proven vital in assisting residents manage the relentless pressures of the cost of living crisis, alongside other council initiatives offering support.”

Cabinet councillors also recommended continuing with the Exceptional Hardship Payments Scheme in 2025/26. This scheme offers additional support to residents facing acute financial crises.

Councillor Robinson added: “We recognise that many local families still face significant financial strain and are committed to providing as much help as possible.”

Full Council will consider adopting Cabinet’s recommendation at its next meeting.
